Joey moved from Perlis to Penang then to Singapore
Joey – one of the chirpy ladies at the checkout counter who joined us in 2015. Joey moved from Perlis (shared border with Hat Yai, Thailand) in the northern tip of Malaysia, to Penang at the age of 20. For 10 years, she worked in a retail company until her then-boyfriend-now-husband, Lucas, invited her to move to Singapore so that they can be each other’s support. Leaving behind familiar grounds, Joey moved to Singapore in 2010.
Joey was working and living alone in Penang when Lucas approached her on Facebook (they have common friends). They started off chatting about common friends. After 6 months of intensive Facebook chatting, Lucas paid her a visit in Penang. That was the first time they met in person. When he returned after their first meet-up, Joey was half expecting the friendship to end just as her friendships with other “virtual”friends had.
She was pleasantly surprised when Lucas continued chatting with her just as they had prior to meeting in person. Some months later, Lucas noticed Joey was feeling down after a bad day at work. He then urged her to join him in Singapore so they can be companions. She then left the familiar grounds in Penang and made the big move to Singapore. Huber’s is her second job in Singapore.

Lucas proposed to Joey on 12th December 2012
She recounted with twinkle in her eyes and a wide smile how Lucas proposed. It was 12th December 2012, she recalled. She was exhausted after a hard day at work (in her first job in Singapore). Lucas had gone to fetch her at her work place in one of his best outfits. They then went for dinner. He excused himself under the pretext of footing the bill. Before she knew it, “Marry Me” by Bruno Mars was playing, and Lucas was down on one knee with a proposal ring.
Having worked in Huber’s for 3 ½ years, Joey enjoys great relationships with the rest of the colleagues, in particular, the cashiers. She played host when she brought Mercedes, Winnie and Janice to Penang, a town she lived in for 10 years. Five of them rented a car and went food hunting ( a common hobby for most of us at Huber’s!) in Penang. They enjoyed one another’s company so much that they have already made a pact to travel again together this year!
PS: Lucas works for Huber's too!
