Lebkuchen - 1st Dec 2019

Besides turkey, the other food item commonly associated with Christmas is...
Gingerbread!
Gingerbread men, gingerbread holiday shapes and gingerbread
houses. Gingerbread cookies come in different shapes and forms. But Germany
takes it to take another level.
German gingerbread cookies, or “Lebkuchen”, is a traditional
Christmas cookie often enjoyed with a cup of coffee of tea. There are many
regional variations to it, but the most well-known is the Nürnberger Lebkuchen
from the German city of Nuremberg.
Nuremberg is considered to be the mecca of gingerbread. Each
bakery keeps its recipe a secret. The Lebkuchen has a Protected Designation of
Origin and must be produced within the city’s boundaries. The city even created
a “League of Lebkuchen-Bakers” centuries way back in 1643.

In view of the coming holiday season, we imported from Germany a huge
range of gingerbread cookies, notably the Nürnberger
Lebkuchen and the Elisen Lebkuchen – Elisen Lebkuchen are the highest quality
Oblaten Lebkuchen (cookies in which dough is baked on a thin wafer) available.
They must have at least 25% almonds, hazelnuts, and/or walnuts (no other nuts
allowed), and must not contain more than 10% flour.
These cookies, either rectangular or round, have a sweet,
lightly nutty taste and their aroma is spicy in a way like nutmeg and allspice.
I especially love the texture of it – soft with a slight crunch and slightly chewy,
in a good way, for me.
Besides buying them as yummy treats for yourselves, you
could also get them as Christmas gifts for your loved ones or colleagues as they
also come in attractive packaging.
Visit our Dempsey store and be greeted by the huge range of
these Lebkuchen right after entering the store via our entrance at the second floor!
