Eugene Vasquez - 1st Feb 2021

Since joining Huber’s Butchery 4 years ago, Eugene
Vasquez (Eugene, for short) has diligently made sure that the shopping
experience at the Butchery is as seamless and enjoyable as it possibly can. As
the Butchery’s Senior Retail Merchandiser, Eugene describes his main
responsibility as “handling and overseeing the retail department”, in which he
ensures that store items are consistently stocked and ready for the visiting
customers. If you meet Eugene at the store, say hi – he knows where every
single item is located and might help you find exactly what you’re looking for!
A man of active mind and body, Eugene likes to spend his
leisure time reading inspirational books, playing chess, and playing
basketball. To Eugene, every day presents a new opportunity for learning, which
is why it is very important to face each day with a positive attitude, no
matter how difficult the day might seem! Eugene’s admirable sense of optimism
has definitely contributed to the positive energy that motivates the Huber’s
family to give their all in every opportunity. Keep it up, Eugene!

- What’s an
interesting thing about your job that a lot of people might not know?
That being in a retail operation is actually quite tough
and challenging! I’ve been working in the retail sector for 8 years, and
one of the interesting aspects of the job is that you’re required to know all
the range of the products and where they are located, such that when customers
ask for assistance, you can confidently guide them to where they are displayed.
It is rather tough, but I’ve gotten used to it!
- What’s the
most memorable experience you’ve had working at the butchery?
A memorable experience was definitely during the COVID-19
outbreak last year. We saw an increase in demand for goods that was quite
overwhelming, which must be met with effective and consistent ordering and
supplying of goods. Through our team’s hard work and perseverance, we were fortunate
to weather the storm together!
- As the Chinese
New Year approaches, we’ve naturally seen a large interest in our wide
range of beef items. Which beef cut do you like to bring home for yourself
and the family?
Definitely the Argentina grass-fed ribeye! It is
incredibly flavourful and tasty, with a very reasonable value for money.
- We heard that you
like to play chess. On a scale of 1 to Magnus Carlsen, how good are you?
(laughs) I’m a novice
chess player! What interests me about a game of chess is that it keeps your
brain working. Every move comes with hundreds of variations of outcomes, so
it’s very rarely the same game twice.
- What’s your
favourite chess piece?
I like the pawn the most! It may have the least point,
and it’s often thought of as a small, sacrificial piece. But, when you come to
think about it, a pawn always has the first move in an opening (some players
choose knight, though rarely). Other pieces will also be captured one by one
throughout the game and most often, at the endgame, it is the pawn that
ultimately protects the king.
- Speaking of
chess, what’s the one game you like to play with the family the most,
during leisure time?
We like to play charade! It’s not really a sport, but we consider
it a more enjoyable indoor activity where everyone can relate and have fun.
- We also heard
you’re an avid reader. What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading the 48 Laws of Power by Robert
Greene. The book is a collection of advices on how to gain power that translate
into a positive outlook in life.
- What
inspirational quote you’d always keep in mind, when the going gets tough?
When the going gets tough, I always like to recall this
phrase: "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the
courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
