MANGALICA is a heritage breed of pig from Hungary. This rare breed, with only a few thousand in existence worldwide, is officially registered as a national treasure of Hungary — and notably, it's a treasure you can eat.
Often mistaken for a sheep due to its woolly coat, the Mangalica thrives in harsh, cold conditions, including winters as frigid as -30°C. This resilience results in its highly marbled, rich red meat, which is considered healthier than regular pork. With the same lineage as Spain’s Iberico pigs, Mangalica offers a similarly fine taste. Its rich marbling delivers a strong umami flavour, akin to Kobe beef, striking a perfect balance between the richness of the meat and the delicate fat.
In the second half of the 20th century, the Mangalica pig nearly faced extinction. However, it was revitalised and today, it’s featured on the menus of Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide.
