Asian Style Braised Beef Short Ribs


For 4 - 6 servings:


5kg short rib
200ml Chinese wine
1 btl hoisin sauce
2 carrots, cut chunks
1 radish, cut chunks
3 red dates
3 tbsp dark soy sauce
5 cloves garlic
2 onions, quartered
1 ginger slice, 2 inch
1 cinnamon stick, 2 star anise, 4 to 5 cloves
Sea salt and pepper to taste
Cooking oil

Cooking Method

  1. Season meat with salt and pepper.

  2. On high heat, sear meat on all sides till brown. Set aside.

  3. Add garlic, onion and ginger to the same pot. Fry till fragrant.

  4. Add wine then hoisin sauce. Return meat to pot and add the spices and dates.

  5. Add enough water so that the liquid comes up to about 1 inch above the meat.

  6. Bring to boil then simmer, uncovered, for about 1 1/2 hours.

  7. Then add potatoes and radish. Simmer for another 20 minutes or so. Season to taste with salt before serving.
